The Fate Of The Furious

This spring, audiences strapped in for the Vin-sanity of “The Fate Of The Furious,” which hauled in $1.2 billion worldwide like it was no big deal. But has the franchise forgotten the core of what made it so appealing in the first place by focusing on family and drama, and all the things that only Vin Diesel cares about? That’s the question asked by Screen Junkies in their new Honest Trailer look at the blockbuster smash. Here’s a thing that’s happening on the Internet today: one of the most integral stars of one of the world’s biggest film franchises is threatening to quit if the franchise doesn’t beef up its female roles. F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise. It’s been a good ride & Im grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years… One Love 🤘🏼❤️🤗🙏🦄✨🌍🙊🤔 A post shared by Michelle Rodriguez (@mrodofficial) on Jun 27, 2017 at 8:43am PDT Here’s what Michelle Rodriguez wrote on her Instagram: F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Perhaps to no one’s surprise, Marvel has another smash hit on its hands. After a strong $101 million opening last week from a few international territories, the full-blown theatrical opening weekend force of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” smashed the box office doors wide open and went interstellar. Domestically, ‘Guardians 2’ soared to an incredible $145 million debut, the 17th best opening weekend gross ever. That’s a massive 53.7% jump from the $94 million ‘Guardians 1’ opened to in 2014. What a strange, but heartening weekend at the box office. There wasn’t much going on in terms of new releases, at least so we thought. The biggest, buzziest film in release, “The Circle,” with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson was killed by critics just days before its release and so everyone assumed (correctly) that the picture would end up a box office turkey (pretty much the case). The fastest film to reach $1 billion ever? That distinction goes to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which hit the mark in all of 12 days. “The Fate Of The Furious” isn’t quite there yet, but revving to a $908 million haul in 10 days is still super impressive. So yes, in case you were wondering “The Fate Of The Furious” is the number one movie in the country yet again, but the real story is being told overseas. By far, the most surprising strength of “The Fate of the Furious” was the off-the-chart chemistry between professional tough guys Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson. Not only did the two men steal every scene they appeared in together – allegedly causing Vin Diesel to force Universal Pictures to remove their post-credits stinger clip from the movie – they also seemed to hint at a relationship that could expand beyond the main stories of the ‘Fast and the Furious‘ franchise. Back in September 2015, Vin Diesel surprised everyone — perhaps for very different reasons — by saying that the ‘Fast and the Furious‘ franchise would be ending after 10 films. “Universal has been so good to me and so trusting of the vision,” Diesel wrote on Facebook at the time, noting that he had promised the studio “one last Trilogy to end the saga.” While “The Fate of the Furious” may be the eighth film in the franchise, given Diesel’s comments, it’s probably better to think of it as the first movie in a brand new trilogy. Welcome back to another episode of The Playlist Podcast. On this episode, I’m joined by Bingeworthy host Kimber Myers and Adjust Your Tracking co-host Joe von Appen to discuss “The Fast and the Furious” franchise. “The Fate of the Furious” – the eighth entry into the 16-year-old series – had the biggest worldwide box office opening this past weekend, but we start our discussion with the series’ humble beginnings as a B-movie “Point Break” knockoff before it turned into blue-collar “Mission: Impossible.” We discuss the series as a whole, give our thoughts on the latest entry, and speculate on where the series should (or shouldn’t) go from here. This weekend sees the final episode of “Feud,” which stars Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange as Hollywood legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford respectively, as they scheme and catfight their way through the filming of “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?” It also sees the second weekend of “The Fate of the Furious,” the eighth ‘Fast and the Furious‘ film which stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, who reportedly fell out on set due to Diesel being a “candy ass” (Johnson’s words). Sorry, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” you are now no longer the record holder for the biggest worldwide opening weekend ever. That distinction goes to “The Fate Of The Furious” which exploded with a massive $532.4 million opening, cracking ‘The Force Awakens’ record by about $3 million. ‘Furious 8’ also decimated the international opening weekend record previously held by “Jurassic World.” Universal’s dinosaur movie smashed open with $316.7 million in 2015 and “Fate Of The Furious” destroyed that figure by over $100 million, landing with a tremendous $432.3 million overseas opening thanks to an insane $190 million debut in China — the largest three-day opening weekend of all-time in China.
