ANAHEIM – The big headlines out of Walt Disney Studios film presentation at D23 today were surrounding the behind-the-scenes footage from Rain Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” and the jaw-dropping preview of the Russo Brothers’ “Avengers: Infinity War.” What can’t be overlooked, however, were the equally enlightening sneaks of Jon Favreau‘s live action “The Lion King” and Rob Marshall’s “Mary Poppins Returns.” The latter was the one film everyone expected would have a presence at the event. It seemed at one point that the Warner Bros. didn’t really love the title of the Doug Liman-directed, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt-starring sci-fi actioner “Edge Of Tomorrow,” a film that did OK business at the box office, but not amazingly so (just $100 million at the domestic box office; better abroad with $270 million). When the film hit DVD, VOD and streaming channels, the words “Live Die Repeat” were splashed all over the marketing and “Edge Of Tomorrow” was in much tinier letters. I may not personally know any Bronies, but I do know enough about “My Little Pony” to realize the brand has extended far beyond the plastic horses that were advertised when I watched cartoons on Saturday mornings as a kid. An animated, big screen outing was pretty much inevitable, but I’m kind of amazed at the voice cast they’ve managed to assemble. Emily Blunt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Pena, Liev Schreiber, Kristin Chenoweth, Sia, and Taye Diggs all lend their pipes to this production, which will take audiences on an equestrian adventure.
