The superficial argument hanging over any discussion of Justin Kelly’s “King Cobra” will sadly, wastefully, frustratingly fall within the orbit of classification: is the film, a true crime yarn that unfolds against a porn industry backdrop, itself an example of pornography? A pruder audience member may respond in the affirmative, citing its graphic (but not explicit) sex scenes, but this is a pretty phoney baloney idea. Neither Kelly nor “King Cobra” actually care about the sex; they’re both more interested, in the abstract, with the people involved in the sex, and the interpersonal dramas that spark between them and eventually lead to murder most foul. Of course, if you watched season 1, you know that control isn’t the only thing that’s illusory. Frankly, we can’t even talk about just why that is without spoiling everything that happened last year, but suffice to say practically everything taken for granted in the first episode was upended by the final moments of the season…

Mr. Robot showrunner Sam Esmail insisted at SXSW today that he’s no “fortune teller,” even though the show’s first season went into production just as a massive post-Snowden national debate about surveillance and the collusion between government and big business flared up. In any case, his luck continues, with the USA Network show’s second season heading into production with a storyline about privacy and encryption just as the FBI and Apple are having a very public fight…
