Cary Fukunaga

While we’ll always wonder what Cary Fukunaga would’ve done with Caleb Carr‘s excellent source material, we’re glad the director is still on board “The Alienist,” even if it’s just in a producer role. The author’s best-selling page-turner is now arriving in a limited series on TNT, and any concerns I might’ve had about the show shying away from the story’s more lurid elements have been abated. There are plenty of streaming services that give you a lot content, but leave you to weed through and find the gems. However, Tribeca Shortlist does things differently. Each month, the subscription movie service from Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises brings selections curated by actors, producers, writers, directors and others to the platform, which they then talk about on the service. It’s like getting a playlist from your favorite filmmakers and stars, and this month Cary Fukunaga (“Sin Nombre,” “Jane Eyre,” “Beasts Of No Nation,” “True Detective“) shares some of his favorites. Fresh off her performance in the recently released Sundance darling “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” Melanie Lynskey has a new film coming out, and judging from the trailer, there’s probably going to be a lot less brutal violence in this one. “Little Boxes” is a dramedy that tells the story of an interracial family from New York that moves to the mundane, overwhelmingly white suburb of Rome, Washington. Cary Fukunaga has been spending the past few months rearranging the puzzle pieces of his directorial plans. Last fall, he dropped out of helming TNT‘s “The Alienist” (but stayed on as a producer), so he could turn his attention to “The Black Count,” but it looks like that project has stalled out. It was only a couple of weeks ago that he swung by Broadway to capture Jake Gyllenhaal singing in “Sunday In The Park With George,” and in August he’ll start filming Netflix‘s “Maniac“ starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. This is a reprint of our review from the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Sundance alum So Yong Kim returns to Park City with a quiet, evocative look at the intimacies and intricacies of female friendship. Sarah (Riley Keough) and Mindy (Jena Malone) make the sort of mismatched pair young women sort themselves into in their early 20s, as if to balance each other out, each seeing the other as a compliment to their own lack. With the success of “La La Land,” I won’t be surprised to see many more actors giving singing a whirl, and if you’re in New York City, you’ll have a chance to see Jake Gyllenhaal do just that in “Sunday In The Park With George.” The actor is gearing up to hit the Broadway stage to belt it out for a few weeks and the first footage is here and it shows he’s got a pretty good voice. Cary Fukunaga hasn’t really rested a moment since releasing last year’s “Beasts Of No Nation,” and while there hasn’t been much news on the film front, he’s been very busy in television. Over the past year, he’s signed up to direct Jonah Hill and Emma Stone in the TV series “Maniac,” attached himself to HBO‘s brewing miniseries take on Stanley Kubrick‘s “Napoleon,” and lending his producing powers to Ira Sachs‘ limited series “Christodora.” Meanwhile, he’s also long been set to write and direct a miniseries adaptation of Caleb Carr‘s acclaimed thriller “The Alienist” for TNT.
