Best Visual Effects

VANCOUVER – Three months after it was released all over the globe on Netflix, a fairly full theater of moviegoers sat down to watch a screening of Bong Joon-ho‘s imaginative and political drama “Okja.” Granted, many on hand knew there was a chance the famed Korean director would appear in some aspect, but that’s still impressive for a film available instantly in a nation where 5.2 million plus residents have the streaming service (about 15% of the population). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 finalists for the VFX Oscar that will participate in the annual “bake off” to determine the 2017 nominees. On Dec. 2 AMPAS announced 20 films that were officially in the running.  Now the field has been cut in half. Missing from the shorter list are notable contenders “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Deadpool” “Alice Through The Looking Glass,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Suicide Squad,” “Sully,” “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Warcraft.” The latter is particularly surprising as many believed it was a lock for a nomination overall. Ryan Reynolds may be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood at the moment, but at a special “Deadpool” screening and Q&A at Fox Studios in Los Angeles this weekend, moderator John Horn humorously introduced the former Sexiest Man Alive as “six-time Academy Award watcher Ryan Reynolds.” That’s a very on-brand description for an actor who, after being brought low by such mega-flops as 2011’s “Green Lantern” and 2013’s “R.I.P.D.
